The New Lamborghini Urus: Supercar or SUV?

The concept of a Lamborghini SUV was first teased about at the 2012 Tokyo Auto Show. The Italian car manufacturer stated that they were interested in producing a SUV under the Lamborghini name. The public scoffed. How could Lambo put out a SUV?

Other luxury car manufacturers had begun toying with the SUV market, but no one ever expected a SUV to be manufactured by Lamborghini. The masses were wrong.

In 2017, the Urus was officially announced. The five-door SUV offers everything that you could ever expect in an SUV with the heart and soul of a supercar. The first SUVs rolled off the line in 2018.

Built with five doors, the Urus is meant to carry at least four passengers and has trunk space for your groceries. While it is absolutely unthinkable to drive a Lamborghini to the grocery store, it is now possible. The height of the vehicle allows you to actually step-up into the car instead of sliding down into it like you would a Huracan.

Lamborghini opted for an 8 cylinder engine for the Urus. This came as a surprise. Lambos generally run 10 or 12 cylinder engines in their supercars. However, to set the Urus apart from their other cars, they opted for the eight. This does not mean that the vehicle lacks power. On the contrary. The engine pulls 650 horsepower and is a similar engine to that found in the Audi S and RS models, the Bentley Continental and the Porsche Cayenne. However, it has been significantly reworked to be specific for the Urus. The changes are impressive, and the engine can put this SUV from 0 to 60 in 3.5 seconds.

The Urus features all-wheel drive and has eight different settings. Street, sport, and snow mode are just three of the variations you can use. Each have their own benefits, and it is very easy to tell when the positions have been changed.

Handling of the Urus is unbelievable. For an SUV, this vehicle takes corners with the precision you would feel in a Huracan. It absolutely drives like a supercar and not a bulky SUV. Lamborghini has mastered this like none of the other ultra-luxury SUV makers. The Urus also features air suspension and has the largest ceramic brake pads on the market.

The engine roars when you accelerate and hums while it is driving. It is more melodic than the supercars from Lamborghini but still sporty and thrilling to hear. The overall opinion when you are driving this fabulous vehicle is that you have entered the next level of automotive superiority.

The Interior

The interior of the Urus was surprisingly comfortable. If you have ever experienced driving a Lamborghini supercar, you know that comfortable seating is not always the top priority of the manufacturer. Keeping things trim and light is more important in these vehicles. However, you don’t drive a Lamborghini sports car to be comfortable.

The Urus is comfortable, however, and the cockpit has a little more room to move around then expected. A person six foot in height can fit in the back seats area, and the passenger seat seems roomy enough for comfort.

When you sit in the drivers seat, you actually sink down a bit. The seat seams to snuggle you in, and your body becomes one with the car. Everything is positioned close by to make using all the features simple.

The dials and knobs are a little industrial looking. But that look gives the interior some style and personality. It lets you know that this is not your mom’s SUV; this is a Lamborghini. Unlike other ultra-luxury SUVs, the Urus has totally integrated technology into the cockpit with a navigation system and other computerized features. All the tech is very similar to that found in an Audi but customized for Lamborghini.

The Past and The Future

This is not the first time that Lamborghini has tried to develop an SUV. However, it is the first time it has developed one for the public. In the 1980’s, Lamborghini manufactured an SUV-type vehicle known as the LM002. This was a very limited run production for military purposes, and the vehicles were never meant for public use.

The LM002 was never as successful as Lamborghini had hoped, and the military opted for Humvee’s instead. In the long run, it was better that these vehicles disappeared into history because they were nowhere as incredible as the Urus is today.

The Urus will be a very limited run production vehicle. Lamborghini has stated that it will only produce 1,000 vehicles in 2018 and 3,500 worldwide in 2019. The car company has not said if it will produce the vehicle after that time or the production numbers.
